Thanks...and help?

Mon Feb 9, 2009, 7:46 PM
So far, so good. Thanks for making this clubs first week on DA a good one. However, we would love it if you guys could spread the news. We want to try and grow bigger faster.

Also, IMW doesn't yet have an avatar/icon. Anyone feel up to creating one for us? It would be greatly appreciated.

We are an organization against DA's new art ownersip rules. We do not feel that, under any circumastances, should you be allowed to trace/copy/etc someone elses artwork.

We would love it some of the artists that view our cause as something substantial would submit some work for us, in which we would show all copyrights go to you.

Thank you - IMA

Would referencing be considered tracing? o.o

oh, no. referencing is far different from tracing.

say an artist is asked to draw a horse. he's never drawn a horse before, so what does he do?

an example of referencing: he looks up pictures of horses to examine and identify the mechanics of their anatomy and uses his new knowledge to create an entirely different picture.

an example of tracing: the artist looks up pictures of horses, but rather than studying them and trying to understand their functioning, he chooses to directly trace over a picture he finds or one that he takes himself.

hope it clears it up for you. but don't quote me on this!

Ahh i see! I don't see the point of tracing, but some stuff i saw on deviantart seems to suggest that "referencing" can be considered "tracing" and i'm pretty worried because i do copy myself, but i never directly trace. Thanks for the help! :3

copying can be a form of learning, in a way. both are significantly better than tracing, especially if you credit!

Finally!!! more people against this dumb rule! Tracing is not art at all! I mean, seriously.

My friends trace alot of stuff and they're like. "Look what I drew!" And im like "no, no, you did not draw that, it doesn't even count as a fanart(sometimes it would be of a character from a book or sumthin...) cuz it was traced." then they try to convince me its art because they used their hands/brain/creativeness...whatever. to make it and I'm like "no...no...thats just not right, I even SAW you trace that!!!!111!!" so.... T_T My friends even buy tracing paper. O_o

The only time I trace is when I like to keep original Lineart of my drawings(sketchy lines and all their glory) to transfer them onto a nother paper that will have the full pic coloured and inked...

which is an entirely different story in itself cuz I drew it in the first place. :p

So stock images are an exception to this "no one shall trace" rule?
